Born in Sydney in 1912, Lindrum had previously contested three World Championship finals against Joe Davis – in 1936, 1937 and 1946. He lost all three, but came closer than anyone to beating him. He was past his best in 1952 when, because of a dispute between the governing body and the players' association, most professional players entered a rival tournament and there were only two entrants to the world championships. The runner–up was Clark McConachy of New Zealand.
